Katie Knoeringer’s work is about play and discovery. Often times the inhabitants of her paintings are realizing or about to realize something incredible about their landscape. Is it real or a day dream? Is the person pictured unknowingly generating it? These are the questions the artist wants the viewer to infer from the work. In addition to the human observers, animals play an important role. Animals don't carry the same complications as people. In the paintings, animals stand in as innocent yet curious observers. They are child-like, experiencing something for the first time, helping to create the state of wonderment she seeks to engender in painting.
These images depict real places Knoeringer has been, but the paintings dwell, in large part, in her imagination. Knoeringer recently relocated from Louisiana to Philadelphia, PA where she serves as an adjunct art instructor at Drexel University.
