Join US in welcoming Seven new artist members

Baton Rouge Gallery (“BRG”) is proud to announce the addition of seven new artist members, representing the largest number of incoming artists to join the organization during a single year in more than a decade.

This group of incoming artists is the result of an annual review of applications from artists interested in joining the gallery. This year, more than thirty applications were submitted, meaning this year’s process was incredibly competitive and required a number of difficult decisions.

These seven artists, all based here in Louisiana, work in a wide array of media and tackle very different subject matter with unique approaches to their art practice. From digital media to printmaking, mixed media sculpture to optokinetic painting, some of these artists apply traditional methods to contemporary subjects, while others fuse them with innovative techniques. The focus of their work has included themes such as racial inequality, manipulated perception, environmental degradation, mental health, and many more.

Please join us in welcoming this exciting group of Louisiana based artists!

Artist Member Selection Process

Each year BRG extends an open call to artists interested in artist membership with the 52 year old contemporary art center and artist cooperative. Applicants are reviewed by the gallery’s Screening Committee, a panel of ten current artist members - the makeup of which changes each year - elected by the full artist membership.

As an artist cooperative, it is at the sole discretion of the artist membership (through the Screening Committee) which artists are extended invitations to join. This artist-centered process sets BRG apart from most museum or commercial gallery structures where decisions of whose work is exhibited may lie with a single curator or owner.

Applications are judged on the artistic merit of the artist’s work, the strength of their resume / exhibition history, and the professionalism of their application.

Stay tuned for details on when each of our new artist members will have their debut exhibitions at BRG.
