DAN COHEN

PORTLAND, OREGON

The thematic core of my work is the quest to explore the mysteries of life and celebrate the magic of our rich mythologies. My work is transpersonal, reaching beyond the individual, concerned especially with esoteric experiences & different states of consciousness beyond the usual limits of ego & personality. I am very interested in exploring archetypal symbols, and examining how they are incorporated into our modern day collective narrative. I believe it is important for art to reflect the time it is created in, & also be relevant to humanity's recurring issues.

We live in a time of unprecedented novelty, and yet, humanity continues to search for meaning, for the end of suffering, & for the evolution of Consciousness.

The most prominent trend I see in our society today is that of synthesis, the bringing together of diverse elements into a new whole. My visual language reflects this, knitting together images from different mythological systems in order to form enlightening juxtapositions of meaning. I also apply this modern approach of synthesis to my materials & techniques. I combine traditional mediums such as oil painting & assemblage with digital rendering, projection, and interactive elements. I like to use sculptural elements in my paintings so the viewer will feel the work in their physical area, shifting perception between actual space & the illusory space. By joining the ancient & the modern, I aim to create works that engage the viewer in the human mythical journey.

Dan Cohen is a classically trained painter, sculptor, muralist, and philosopher. His influences include world mythologies, occult sciences, and alternative states of consciousness. His signature elements?beautifully rendered forms, archetypal symbolism, occultic designs, meticulously crafted panels and constructs bridge the past and the future, magic and technology. He currently lives and works in the Pacific Northwest, Los Angeles, and New York City.
