JEREMY BURKS

AUSTIN, TEXAS

I grew up an only child, in the industrial part of Ohio. Most of my childhood was spent lost in my imagination, reading and drawing constantly.

I am primarily a self-taught artist. My formative influences were days spent exploring the scrap yard where my father worked and summers roaming the Dayton Art Institute. I was in turn obsessed with mythology, magic, historical piracy, horror and mystery novels, fantasy, science fiction, comic books, heavy metal, hip-hop and punk rock. Not that much has changed.

I spent four years with other transient artists, anarchists, and weirdos, and graduated from Antioch College in 2001 with a degree in film production. Afterward, I lived in a whole bunch of places (but often New Jersey). I have lived in Austin, Texas for the past 10 years or so, with my brilliant and talented wife and son.

My current work is mostly about children, violence, and imagination. Which is to say, people. This has been primarily in the medium of colored pencil drawings on panels. I also do collaborative installation work with Austin art collective Ink Tank.
