KIMBERLY M. BECOAT

Brooklyn, NY

Kimberly M. Becoat is a contemporary mixed media artist whose work combines abstraction and the figure with a conceptual investigation of new materials. She uses a variety of materials including acrylic paint, sumi ink, and watercolor as well as less conventional items like sand, tar paper, foil, candy wrappers, and other detritus. Combining both traditional art-making materials and elements found in community, what she makes her work from is a reflection of the social and cultural subjects being explored in her work.

The work included in And We Went is part of her Urbania series. A reflection of her experience growing up in forgotten, Black and Latino areas of the City, these images capture universal elements in Black communities from Baton Rouge to Buffalo, NY.

Ownership and access to leisure space are at the core of And We Went. Becoat’s work expresses the collective truth of limited access to recreation, recognition of reclaiming liberation, and restorative play.
