Sarah House’s work focuses on the interconnection that threads throughout nature, and the relationships we have with each other and the planet. The sculptures she creates all stem from her interest in natural fractals, and how these self-similar patterns reinforce the concept of connection. Natural fractals are the result of chaotic systems and appear everywhere we look, from clouds to sidewalk cracks. Aside from their intrinsic beauty, fractals share structural similarities. For example, our nervous system branches in the same manner as a river system or tree. Numerous and varied examples of these similarities throughout nature fuel the artist’s creative process. By making art with this in mind, she hopes to share a bit of that excitement and wonder with the viewer.

“The ceramic sculpture and installations I create use a variety of processes and techniques to express my artistic vision. Though everything I make begins with spending time in nature. I soak in the beauty, observe how life and landscape interact, and glean shapes and relationships that could be turned into sculptural art. I then sit down to design forms on 3D modeling software that are ultimately turned into plaster slip casting molds. I utilize various traditional ceramic hand-building techniques to sculpt forms that are combined with slip cast elements and create works that reference nature in familiar yet ambiguous ways. If I facilitate in my audience a feeling of connection to something greater than themselves through my work, and remind them of the complex beauty of nature, I will have accomplished my creative goals.” - House
