Recent photographs by Jeremiah Ariaz feature dystopian scenes from the contemporary American landscape. Made across battleground states in both public and private spaces, as well as at sites of protest and civic unrest, the large-scale color images evoke the anxiety felt by many at this critical juncture when democracy in our country is in peril.

Jeremiah Ariaz works explore the American West as both a physical space and a terrain for the imagination. He received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and MFA from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Through long-term photographic projects Ariaz brings scrutiny to popular representations of the American West while revealing alternative narratives that have been under-represented in history.

Projects include Tucumcari, Staging the West, Plain Song, The Fourth Estate, among others. For his most recently completed series, Louisiana Trail Riders he was the recipient of a 2018 ATLAS grant, the Michael P. Smith Award for Documentary Photography from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, the Southern Arts Finalist Prize from South Arts, as well as being named the Louisiana State Fellow. The photographs have been exhibited nationally and a monograph of the work was released in 2018 by UL Press. The book has been featured in the Paris Review, U.S. News and World Report, Oxford American, among others.

His current, on-going project, Talking Hard Traveling Battleground Blues began in the run-up to the 2020 presidential election and will continue until the 2024 election.

Ariaz is a Professor at Louisiana State University.

This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Christopher Scott Brumfield, David DuBose, & Scott David Finch. All works from these artists are on view, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) from March 1st - 31st.
