Malaika Favorite works in a variety of different media, allowing her flexibility based on the nature and purpose of the work. In recent years, Favorite has focused on her family history, her relationship with herself, and the environment. She pulls textures into her compositions from scraps of fabric, leaves, paper, and other things that hold significance to her. These elements add a touch of history to the topics of each painting. She’s interested in creating bright, highly saturated artworks that often break the traditional rectangle that the public is used to seeing in other painted media.
“This series of works focus on our responsibility to each other and the environment we share. I am everything and everything is me. You are everything and everything is you. Together we owe a commitment of responsibility to each other and to our planet. When we breathe in the free air and drink clean water, we must remember to be thankful. We often fail to value the God given beauty we have inherited in our waterscapes, landscapes, and every person we encounter. This show is a reminder to love and appreciate each other and use our natural resources with respect and appreciation by giving back to the earth and taking care of those who need our attention.
Four pieces from this series are now on display in the show, Remember Earth at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans.
I wish to acknowledge the National Performance Network, 2021 Take Notice Fund for the grant used to create this show.” - Favorite
