Join us for an author talk and book signing with Dr. Sarah L. Webb, author of Colorism: The Politics of Skin Tone and How We Get Free. Colorism is a social hierarchy that favors people with lighter skin tones and stigmatizes people with darker skin tones. Colorism frays the fabric of our homes and communities and jeopardizes the lives and livelihoods of individuals most impacted. While it goes unrecognized by most, colorism contours our daily lives and has a global stronghold on communities of color and white communities alike. In this conversation with Donney Rose and audience Q&A, Dr. Sarah will discuss various forms of historic and contemporary art as both cultural record and narrative construction that shapes culture. Through the analysis of art ranging from the early 17th century "Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I" to the 1988 film School Daze, and ending with the notable cover of her own book,Dr. Sarah will teach the audience how to recognize colorism and how to leverage the magic of art to awaken consciousness and transform reality.
