Movies & Music: 'Phantom of the Opera' & Neon Mountain

Movies & Music on the Lawn Kicks Off 20th Season with 'Phantom' and Neon Mountain

Join us on Friday, May 18 when BRG's popular summer film series, Movies & Music on the Lawn, Presented by Pop Shop Records, brings Baton Rouge's own Neon Mountain to City Park to perform a special, never-before-heard score for the unforgettable 1920 silent, "The Phantom of the Opera."

This will mark the beginning of Movies & Music's 20th year of bringing together the best silent films of all time with the best musicians of our time (and place).

As always, BRG members get in free of charge and everyone enjoys bottomless popcorn!

Having been birthed right here in Baton Rouge, Neon Mountain describes their sound as "dream pop/neo-psychedelic rock." The band's five members represent something of a supergroup of Baton Rouge music over the last ten years or so, with them having extended stints with acts like Captain Green, Cohen & The Ghost, Gypsy Space Caravan, and Monsters Will. After assembling in 2013, the band released their debut effort two years later, "Escape (The Factory)," with Red Pyramid Records. They are currently working on their sophomore effort, but have taken a small break to compose and rehearse an all-new original film score, just for you, for this special evening.

"The Phantom of the Opera" (1925) is easily one of the most iconic films from the silent era and one that has proven to be timeless, even nearly 100 years later. Starring Lon Chaney, the film tells the story of a young opera singer with a mysterious admirer. The masked man is a horribly disfigured recluse living beneath the Paris Opera House who ultimately takes the singer prisoner, forcing her suitor to come to her aid.

Join us for a special night as Neon Mountain breathes new life into one of silent cinema's most unforgettable characters!
