Sundays@4 - Terry Riley's 'In C'

  • Baton Rouge Gallery 1515 Dalrymple Drive BATON ROUGE United States (map)

Alex V. Cook

Organized by musician Alex V. Cook (of The Rakers) and inspired by the latest works of BRG Artist Member Rob Lamb Carpenter, you are invited to a special performance of Terry Riley’s 1964 piece, “In C,” courtesy of a collection of local musicians.

As with all Sundays@4 performances, this will be free and open to all.

“In C” is a minimalist ensemble piece by Terry Riley for a flexible number of performers where they all perform short musical passages to a pulse but not necessarily at the same time. The piece is comprised of 53 melodic patterns played in sequence with performers using a variety of instruments and listening carefully to their fellow collaborators.

The latest BRG exhibition from Rob Lamb Carpenter, Path of Moving Points, was the catalyst for this performance. The artist, in speaking with Alex V. Cook, mentioned having always dreamed of having minimalist music performed alongside his work. Cook has taken that as his cue, enlisted the help of fellow Baton Rouge-area musicians, and prepared an intimate performance that celebrates patterns, repetition, and interconnectedness through both the visual and the audible.
