brg, ebr schools connect local students & professional artists
Baton Rouge Gallery (“BRG”) is proud to announce, in partnership with East Baton Rouge Parish Schools’ Fine Arts Program, a new pilot program that will give students an in-depth look at - and understanding of - the work of living, professional artists. The Virtual Masterclass & Gallery Tour series, kicking off in October 2020, will allow for a safe, virtual experience that encourages interaction between students and accomplished visual artists and gives them the opportunity to talk with artists about their process, their techniques, and even their career.
This series is provided at no cost to teachers or students.
The program’s first virtual Masterclass will be held on October 22 with instructors having the opportunity to choose between (or take advantage of both) two times for their convenience. Students will meet and learn from BRG Artist Member April Hammock, hear the stories behind her latest exhibition at BRG (Electric Edens), and participate in an interactive virtual class on shape and color, led by the artist. The Virtual Masterclass will be offered live from 8:30-9:30am and 10:00-11:00am.
Instructors interested in being a part of the kickoff of this new program are invited to register with BRG by October 20 via the simple form below. A simple-to-use Zoom link will be provided on October 21 for all instructors to sign in to the Virtual Masterclass. Again, there are no fees at all associated with your or your students’ participation.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR FOR THIS VIRTUAL MASTERCLASS
A BRG Artist Member since 2001, April Hammock's work consists of oil and acrylic paintings focusing on form and spaces intertwining, breaking apart and building. Her work is influenced by both metaphysics and a perceived ambiguity between exterior and interior spaces.
Hammock’s latest exhibition at BRG, Electric Edens, is currently on view at BRG through October 29 (alongside exhibitions from Craig McCullen and Jessica Sharpe). The gallery is open to the public with no admission fees Tuesday - Sunday, 12 - 6pm.
Hammock has exhibited work in national and local galleries from New York to California, as well as throughout her home state of Louisiana. Hammock has taught art at Louisiana State University, University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Southeastern Louisiana University. Currently, she is an instructor for Talented Visual Arts in the East Baton Rouge Gifted and Talented Program at Baton Rouge Magnet High School.
