Trained as both a printmaker and painter, Leslie Elliottsmith has employed techniques from both these art forms in her work since 2010 as a photographer. Whether shooting on location or in the studio, instead of using her lens to capture a single moment in time, she chooses to invent scenes, combining multiple images to compel the viewer to suspend reality and investigate the imagery. Most recently, her work has served as a response to the current socio-political climate, with immigration and the environment permeating her work’s narrative.

“The photographs and paintings are created with the same process; starting with a concept, not a finished idea and letting the imagery evolve through the layering of images. Inspiration comes from environmental and socio-political issues.  My allegorical works are meant to inspire personal contemplation through the narrative symbolism.

As an artist, I find solace through the process of creating and also being rooted in the soil, water, and air of my gardens and nature. Recent natural disasters have caused pivotal evaluations of humanities supposed role as protector of the environment. Each time a disaster happens whether in nature or society, my reaction is to seek knowledge and create.  What is a bit disconcerting is that I can go back 20 years and see the same issues raising their ugly heads again and again in my work.  Knowledge is power and history is a critical magnifying glass. We must pay attention.” - Elliottsmith

This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Scott Finch & Kelly Anne Mueller. All works from these artists are on view, free of charge, during regular gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) from Sep 26 - Oct 26, 2025.
