Margaret Humphris' artistic vision calls upon everything from her travel experiences to personal dreams, from dance to multi-cultural myths. Over the past twenty years, Humphris has evolved a method of layered painting that evokes a sense of multiplicity and produces associations that are unpredictable and powerful. Most recently, Humphris’ work has focused on the concept of spiritual wholeness: balancing the ever-shifting dualities such as masculine and feminine, light and dark, etc.
In addition to making art, she is a former clinical staff member of the LSU Mental Health Service. She continues to pursue her interests in Sandplay Therapy and the therapeutic use of the expressive creative arts.
“Life is naturally full of downs and ups, of fallings and (hopefully) risings, of dark and light situations and/or periods that appear and abate in unforeseeable intervals… Although often quite trying, even painful, the down or dark times are not always inherently bad; indeed, these times spent “in the deep” may be essential to one’s process and just as graced as the times of light and joy.
While pondering again the mystery of inner ups and downs, of light and dark, of experiencing being both above and below psyche’s threshold or horizon, I have been invited to revisit my own existential, alchemical, and spiritual associations which have arisen out of the sea fog.
The medieval tradition of the illuminated manuscript seemed particularly fitting for this exploration into the ineffable…” - Humphris
This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Samuel Joseph Corso and Amy James. All works from these artists are on view, free of charge, during regular gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) from June 3 - 26, 2025.
