Sarah House works primarily with ceramic materials to create abstract sculpture and Installation art inspired by the fractal mathematics of nature. House earned her BFA from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, and her MFA from Tulane University, graduating from both institutions with honors.

“My work is inspired by systems of interconnection in nature, as embodied by natural fractals. The structural similarities these patterns share excite in me a profound sense of belonging to a greater whole. Taking visual cues from the ways in which life and landscape interact, particularly from mushrooms and slime molds, I create abstract sculpture and installation art that is both familiar and ambiguous. My goal is to evoke a whimsical alien landscape.

Rooted in ceramics, my practice has expanded to include materials such as wool, wire, and plaster. These materials allow me to explore contrasts—softness and rigidity, fragility and resilience—while building complex, layered forms that reference the familiar while staying ambiguous. I’m interested in the threshold between the organic and the constructed, and in how texture, form, and scale can spark recognition without prescribing meaning. My intention is to invite the viewer to imagine a root system, a reef, a being—and, hopefully, to find connection.

I see my practice as both a personal and relational space—a way of investigating how things connect, hold, and transform. Through the interplay of materials and ideas, I aim to create work that invites playful curiosity, contemplation, and a sense of quiet wonder.” -House
