Rosemary Goodell, trained as a painter originally, now makes works of art by a printmaking process called monotyping. She uses cut-out forms, patterns, and textures to create works that tell a story. The shapes in her work become figures, structures, or even animals depending on how she chooses the color palette and the layout of the compositions. Though printmaking as a medium is well known for the ability to create multiples, Goodell employs the methods to make single unreproducible images. The process of relief and collagraph printing are appealing methods of art-making that give her monoprints their recognizable style.

“Story telling is the most ancient of human art forms.  Our ability to convey information and establish meaning through stories is what sets us apart from other animal species. Stories tell us who we are, where we come from and where we are going. I am a narrative artist. The shapes and symbols I create become actors in a drama I make up. The subjects come directly from my imagination to form a picture puzzle for the viewer to solve. By assigning roles and personalities to the shapes and symbols I can bring them to life as part of my story. These characters interact and express emotions enabling the exploration of different themes and experiences.” - Goodell

Rosemary Goodell was born in California. She studied at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston, UCLA, and received her B.A., Phi Beta Kappa, in art and MA in Painting from the University of California, Berkeley.
