Sarah House is known for her innovative approach to sculpture, which involves a unique blend of traditional ceramic techniques and modern technology. She is particularly interested in creating abstract representations of forms found in nature, often using geometric forms and moments highlighted in gold to convey a sense of energy. Through the use of 3d modeling and other digital tools, House is able to create intricate works that challenge traditional notions of ceramic practice. The resulting sculptures are a testament to the artist’s creativity and technical skill, as well as her deep reverence for the natural world.

“My work focuses on systems of interconnection in nature, as embodied by natural fractals. The result of chaotic systems, fractals are all around us, from clouds to sidewalk cracks. In addition to their formal beauty, fractals share structural similarities; human nervous systems branch in the same manner as a river system or tree. My exploration is fueled by numerous and varied examples of these similarities throughout the natural world and I express these ideas through ceramic sculpture. At times the works seem to exist in a purely mathematical world, with crystalline geometric shapes growing and branching from one another, while other works embody an ethereal organic vibe with an air disordered order. For my most recent explorations, I’ve been using abstracted forest imagery as a visual language to communicate ideas of interconnection, specifically with mushroom-like forms. The forest is connected through a vast and fractal system of fungal threads beneath the forest floor; trees use this system to communicate with each other and share resources. This example of interconnection through fractals is symbolic of the bigger picture: how we are connected to all life and landscape. The works all reference nature in familiar yet ambiguous ways, inviting the viewer to imagine a root system, a reef, a body, and find connection, and hopefully, reminding the viewer of the complex beauty of nature.” - Sarah House
