Margaret Humphris' artistic vision calls upon everything from her own travel experiences to personal dreams, from dance to multicultural myths. Over the past twenty years, Humphris has evolved a method of layered painting that evokes a sense of multiplicity and produces associations that are unpredictable and powerful. Most recently, Humphris’ work has focused on the concept of spiritual wholeness: balancing the ever-shifting dualities such as masculine and feminine, light and dark, etc.

“Life is naturally full of ups and downs, of light and dark situations and/or phases… Although often quite trying, even painful, the dark times are not always inherently bad; indeed these times spent underground may be essential to one’s process and just as graced as the times of light and joy.

While pondering again the mystery of light and dark, of experiencing being both above and below ground, I have been invited to revisit my own existential, alchemical, and spiritual associations which have arisen out of the fog.

The medieval methodology of the illuminated manuscript seemed particularly fitting for this exploration into the ineffable.” - Humphris

In addition to making art, she is a clinical staff member of the LSU Mental Health Service. She continues to pursue her interests in Sandplay Therapy and the therapeutic use of the expressive creative arts.

This exhibition is presented alongside the latest works from Mary Ann Caffery, Phyllis Lear, and David Scott Smith. All works from these artists are on view, free of charge, during regular gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) from June 6 - 29, 2023.
