Libby Johnson : unknowing

a virtual first wednesday opening will be held on brg’s facebook, youtube, and instagram pages on march 3.

the gallery will be open during regular business hours (Tu - Su, 12pm - 6pm) for individuals or groups under 25 people. social distancing and masks are required.

By utilizing dark and dramatic color schemes, Libby Johnson invokes a sense of mystery and drama in her latest works. Her first exhibition since rejoining BRG as an artist member in 2019, Unknowing, finds Johnson examining the static form of the earth and its contrast with the ever-changing, dramatic sky above. The subjects in this series of landscape and cityscape paintings are lit by dark, twilight tones, creating a subtle energy that draws in the viewer and invites questions of her slightly abstracted portrayals of natural and urban settings alike.

Libby Johnson earned her Bachelors of Fine Art and her Masters of Fine Art from Louisiana State University. In 2000 she opened Studio dei Leoni and began teaching group classes on painting, abstraction, and the structure of the human form. Previously she has taught at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, Colorado and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gaitlinburg, Tennessee.

Johnson is a painter who uses realistic depictions of nature as a foundation for expressing thoughts, mysteries and feelings that are intertwined with those images. She uses oil paint because of its organic quality and intense but natural colors.

She has work in more than a dozen different collections including those of Chevron Oil Company (Houston, Texas), Pepsico International (Dallas, Texas), Louisiana Arts & Science Museum (Baton Rouge, Louisiana), and the New Orleans Museum of Art (New Orleans, Louisiana).

Unknowing is presented alongside exhibitions from Danielle Burns, Leslie Koptcho, and Matt Morris. All works from these artists are on view, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) from March 2 - April 1, 2021.
