matt morris : planets

a virtual first wednesday opening will be held on brg’s facebook, youtube, and instagram pages on march 3.

the gallery will be open during regular business hours (Tu - Su, 12pm - 6pm) for individuals or groups under 25 people. social distancing and masks are required.

Artist Matt Morris is taking a new approach to working with the shape his art takes with his new BRG exhibition, Planets. Where many of Morris’s works are displayed on a circular plane, rather than a square or rectangle, he is now addressing the subjects of his imagery in such a way as to create the illusion that the viewer is peering through a window into another world. The subject of his photographs are staged in reality and the lens of his camera has become the portal through which we enjoy his new, imaginative take on the world.

Morris is a mixed media artist who often explores relationships between nature and technology. In his most recent work this combination of media is presented as a photographic print in order to blur the distinction between perception and reality. Morris spent a decade living in Bavaria and continues to be influenced by the art and architecture of central Europe. He is motivated by both environmental events and cultural issues.

Morris has had solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, Paris, and Hamburg. While in southern California, he was awarded the Los Angeles Artcore prize by Roland Reiss. Since returning to Louisiana in 2008 (and joining BRG the following year), Morris has worked as an adjunct professor at Louisiana State University and Baton Rouge Community College.

Planets is presented alongside exhibitions from Danielle Burns, Libby Johnson, and Leslie Koptcho. All works from these artists are on view, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (12 - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun) from March 2 - April 1, 2021.
