JESSICA Sharpe

The Earth-bound incarnation of Jessica Sharpe is an installation artist and mixed-media painter. Her work focuses on the similarities between the grand scale things like the universe and the microscopic. She’s interested in new discoveries, science, and the mystic. She’s a combination of wild animal and erudite thinker. Her work is a visual exploration of ideas and connections that humanity is on the brink of discovering.

“As above, So below,” the microcosm and the macrocosm share many similarities and together reveal the true form of nature.  Recently, NASA has been using microscopic slime mold simulations to map out the outermost shape of the known universe.  My inspiration begins with the creation of an imaginary landscape, derived from fungi, mushrooms and slime mold.  When examining the micro, larger patterns reveal themselves and entire worlds are visible.

This painting series reflects on the strangeness of now, as Terence McKenna, Carl Jung, and the many occultists of the past have shared through their esoteric philosophies. From within ancient texts, such as the Emerald Tablets, to microscopic algorithms, we can be guided towards universal inner wisdom.

She was born and raised in Ohio, receiving her BFA in Painting and Art History from the University of Cincinnati in 2003. She attended graduate school as the School of Art Fellow at Syracuse University in upstate New York, receiving her MFA in 2010 before moving her studio practice to New York City. While there, her professional experience included working as a freelance visual merchandiser for Saks Fifth Avenue and as an artist assistant at Annie Varnot Studios. Over the past ten years, her work has been exhibited across the United States, from Baltimore to California. Currently, she resides in Jacksonville, FL where she maintains a daily studio practice while raising her young son and meditating on eternal truths.  She is also a member of the Squonk Works, a collaboration with her husband, a landscape architect.
